About Us
Kannada Sangha, Hong Kong (KSHK) is a non profit organization representing Karnataka / Kannadiga community in and around Hong Kong. It is a cultural and social organization. The purpose of this organization is to propagate Karnataka culture, Kannada language and art forms among Kannadigas and other like minded people. Probably KSHK is the first such Kannada organization in the entire Greater China geography! KSHK has been active since few years already.
The Birth and Growth Of KSHK
Hong Kong always had a community of Kannadigas, who would come together to celebrate Ugadi or go for a picnic and such. However, there was no for all organisation to provide a structure or platform to these activities. In the fall of 2004 a group of us met in a coffee shop in Tai Koo Shing MTR station and brainstormed the idea of setting up a Kannada Sangha. The result was the establishment of Kannada Sangha Hong Kong in January 2005.
The Sangha's humble begginnings saw a small membership. But what the Sangha has always been blessed with is a committed, determined and an enthusiastic set of members who have taken it upon themselves to grow the Sangha and spread Kannada culture. It is therefore no surprise that the Sangha has always had a new president being elected each year. Starting from the challenge of finding and bringing Kannadigas together, the Sangha has set remarkable milestones in terms of the variety of cultural programmes, charitable activities and support for local talent it has provided over the years.
Some of the milestones are:
April 2006: The Sahgha's first Kannada feature film 'Amruthadhaare' screened in Hong Kong, together with a conversation with its director Sri Nagathihalli Chandrashekar
May 2006: The Sangha's first invitation to a playback singer, Smt. Manjula Gururaj, and noted humourist Sri Krishne Gowda
November 2006: Sangha pays tribute to Dasa Sahitya by organising a lecture by Sri Aralumallige Parthasarathy
February 2007: Sangha hosts its first drama workshop ably conducted by noted theatre personality Sri Subbaraya Bhat
